SUSTAINABILITY
Meeting the needs of the present without compromising the needs of future generations.
Economical, environmental, social.
Environmental - natural, renewable resources.
Social - the social well being of a country, organisation or community can be maintained in the long term. Different groups, nationalities, religions etc.
Economic - maintaining independence and have access of the financial and other resources they require to meet needs.
Culture - the protection and promotion of cultural diversity is vital to human rights and fundamental freedoms. It moulds social relations.



RESEARCH

What is typography?
Establish questions of themes, short phrases to guide research. e.g. ‘a definition of typography’, ‘key developments within typography’
Phrasing searches, e.g. ‘history of typography’, ’typography and legibility’

Sources:
Websites - evaluate the reliability, e.g. don’t use wikipedia, uni websites are good.
Library - ask Andy.
Textbooks - ’history of…’ ‘how to…’ ‘ what is…’
Readers - collections of specific and contemporary research, not useful for general research.
jstor.org - journals, books, pamphlets.
Google books - you can search inside the book for what you’re looking for.
Google scholar - database of academic literature. 
Books - go to contents first, then skim and note.

Logging resources
  • Use tables e.g. template ‘triangulation worksheet’ on estudio.
  • Don’t collect quotes, gather key points in own words.
  • Mindmaps
  • Scan pages of books
  • Bullet point short summaries


TYPOGRAPHY ESSAY

Research aims:
  • Broad definitions
  • Key developments
  • Argue these findings: ’Says who?’ ‘Where have you read that?’ ‘How do you know thats true?’ 

Definition of typography:
The style and appearance of printed matter

The art of arranging type or processing data and printing from it
